14AmyCutlerWalterGropiusMasterArtistSeriesPresentsDuringthisthree-dayworkshopexploredifferentapproachestodevelopinganarrative.Throughavarietyofexercisesandexperimentsconsiderthemanylayersinvolvedincreatinganimagethatinvitesviewersinandallowsimaginationstowander.Narrativepaintingshouldnotmerelybeaboutillustratingastorybutratheraninvitationformanyinterpretations.Thisworkshopisaninvitationtocreateadialoguewithyoursubconsciousandtobegintounderstandyourownpersonalvisualvocabulary.Priortotheworkshopparticipantswillbeaskedtocollectfiveormoreunrelatedimagesfromnewspapersandmagazinesthattheyfeelhaveanarrativeconnectivity.Writedownfiveormoreoverheardconversationsandormisunderstoodconversationsmisreadings.Putyourselfinsituationswhereyoubecomeanobserveranypeopledplacewilldo.Acafethepublicbusagrocerystoreetc.Collectfiveormoreoverheardconversationsormisunderstandings.Writethemdown.Theycouldbepartsofaconversationthatpiquedyourinterestbecauseofobscurityorabsurdity.Maybeyouwereinaconversationandmisunderstoodafewwordsortheintention.Thesecanallbeusedasrawmaterialindevelopinganarrative.ArtistBackgroundAmyCutlerisinternationallyrecognizedforhermeticulouslydetailednarrativeworksofartopen-endedallegoriesthatareatoncewhimsicalominousandperplexing.Cutlerx19sgouachepaintingsdrawingsandprintsvividlydepictaworldpopulatedbywomenanimalsandhybrid-beingsengagedinfantasticdream-likeactivities.Withinthisrichlyimagineduniversewomenhaveelongatednosesimpossiblylongpigtailsteapotheadsorbroomstickarms.Theyperformmysteriousactionssuchasre-snoutingpigsorpeacefullystitchingtigersbacktogether.Cutlerdrawsinspirationfromstoriesandimagesencounteredincurrenteventsfablesfolktalesandarthistory.LikesomanyoftheilluminatedmanuscriptsandaltarpaintingsthatserveasherhistoricalanchorsCutlerx19sworksarecraftedwithsuchaprecisionandspecificitythatweasviewersfeelcompelledtoaskquestionsdevelopanswersandallegorize.Howeverintheseambiguousfablesthefullnarrativearcisneverquiterevealed.Detailsbecomeclueshintsofmotiveandgeneratedynamicresponses.Theresponsibilityforinventingandinterpretingtheseemotionallycomplexnarrativesultimatelylieswiththeviewer.CutlerwasborninPoughkeepsieN.Y.in1974.ShestudiedattheStaatlicheHochschulefurBildendeKunsteStadelschuleFrankfurtamMainGermanyfrom1994-1995receivedherBFAfromTheCooperUnionSchoolofArtNewYorkN.Y.in1997andcontinuedherstudiesattheSkowheganSchoolofPaintingandSculpturein1999.HavingrapidlygainedaninternationalaudienceCutlerx19sworkhasbeenincludedinmajorexhibitionsofcontemporaryartincludingTheWhitneyBiennialin2004andGreaterNewYorkatPSIMOMAin2005.ShehashadsoloexhibitionsattheKemperMuseumofContemporaryArtKansasCityMo.theWalkerArtCenterMinneapolisMinn.andtheInstituteofContemporaryArtPhiladelphiaPenn.HerpaintingsdrawingsandprintsareincludedinthecollectionsoftheHammerMuseumatUCLAtheMetropolitanMuseumofArtMuseumofModernArtandNewMuseumofContemporaryArtinNewYorkCityN.Y.theWalkerArtCenterMinneapolisMinn.theIndianapolisMuseumofArtIndianapolisInd.andnumerousprivatecollections.CutlerisrepresentedbyLeslieTonkonowArtworksProjectsNewYorkN.Y.ExhibitionMarch17-May132012PublicLectureMarch222012at7p.m.Areceptionfollows.Admissionisfree.WorkshopPeelingTheOniontakesplaceMarch23-252012from9a.m.to4p.m.AmyCutlerCakeToss2004.Lithograph21x24.ImageCreditCopyrightAmyCutlerCourtesyLeslieTonkonowArtworksProjectsNewYork.
