4LookingBackHuntingtonthroughtheLensofLeviHolleyStoneLeviHolleyStone1898-1981historicalHuntingtonsunknownphotographerhasatlastbeendiscovered.LocalresidentJohnWitekwhoisanEmmyAwardWinningwriterdocumentaryfilmmakerandinveteratecollectorpurchasedmorethan1000negativesbyStoneatalocalfleamarket.AtthetimeWitekwasunawareofStonesphotographsaswasjustabouteveryoneoutsideofStonesfamilyandhadnowayofknowingthathehadstumbleduponanundiscoveredcacheofuniqueimagestakenbyaself-taughtphotographerwithgreatvision.WitekbeganresearchingthelifeofLeviHolleyStoneandincludedthefollowingfactsaboutthatlifeinanarticletitledForgottenHuntingtonTheHomeTownPhotosofL.H.StoneLikemanyofhisgenerationStonewasself-taughtandself-reliant.Hewasajackofalltradeswhowasgoodwithhishands.AtdifferenttimesheworkedasacementcarrierpaperhangercarpentertheatricalpropertymanagerelectricianandTeamster.HedroveatruckforapowercompanywasalibrarianforaWPAorchestraandmanagedadormitoryatMarshallCollege.Hewasalsoacrackerjackbaseballplayerandheplayedguitaraswell.Caughtupintheamateurphotographycrazethatbeganattheendofthe19thcenturywiththeinventionoftheKodakcameraStonelikemostamateurphotographerstookmanypicturesoffamilyandfriends.ButasWitekrealizedafterenlargingStonessmallnegativesthesewerenotyourtypicalfamilyphotos.Thephotographerhadagoodeyeandcomposedhisshotsartfully.AsWitekwroteStonewasthinkinglikeanartistbeforemostpeoplefeltthatphotographycouldbeanart.ManyofStonesimagesportraypeopleandplacesencounteredinHuntingtonfromasearlyas1912andintothe1940s.TheseincludeshotsofcrowdsduringparadesdownThirdAvenueautomobilesandgasstationsluncheonettespoolhallspublicmonumentsvaudevilleentertainersmovietheatersandmuchmore.TheyanticipatethegenerationofstreetanddocumentaryphotographerssuchasRobertFrankWalkerEvansLeeFriedlanderGarryWinograndandDianeArbus.Theyarenotonlyinterestinghistoricallymanystandontheirownasworksofart.In2011JohnWitekintroducedtheworkofLeviHolleyStonetostaffattheHuntingtonMuseumofArt.SoonthedecisionwasmadewiththeblessingofStonesdescendantstohostanexhibitof80selectedphotographs.May252013-August182013IsabelleGwynnandRobertDaineGalleryEmmyAward-winningwriteranddocumentaryflmmakerJohnWitekwillleadaGalleryWalkthroughthisexhibitaspartotheFourthTuesdayTourat715p.m.June252013.Admissionisree.Rereshmentswillbeserved.FreeTuesdaysattheHuntingtonMuseumoArtaresponsoredbyATT.LocalphotographerSholtenSingerhasscannedandordigitallyphotographedthenegativeswhichwillbeprintedbytheHuntingtonMuseumofArt.LocalHistorianJamesCastoandJohnWitekwillidentifyplacesandpeopleinthephotographs.YoumaybeabletoshedsomelightonthistooWelookforwardtointroducingthephotographsofL.H.StonetotheMuseumsaudience.ThisexhibitispresentedbyTheHerald-DispatchandsponsoredInMemoryofCharlotteandAlbertBoosInMemoryofMrs.SusieBernevFatzingerInMemoryofCarneyandMargaretM.LaynetheIsabelleGwynnandRobertDaineExhibitionEndowmenttheWestVirginiaDivisionofCultureandHistoryandtheNationalEndowmentfortheArtswithapprovalfromtheWestVirginiaCommissionontheArts.TheHerald-DispatchPresents2013EstateofL.H.StoneLeviHollyStonedroveatruckforapowercompanyinthe1940swhenhetookthispowerfulphotographoftwocompanylinemen.ThelargereelsinthepicturearemarkedwiththenameAluminumCompanyofAmerica.
