20MemberProfleJOHNH.WEBERYouneverlearnallyouneedtointhearts.ThesewordsrepresentaphilosophyandanapproachtolifeforoneofHMAsTrusteesandvolunteersJohnH.Weber.BornandraisedoutsidePhiladelphiainNorristownPAJohnwastakentomuseumsandconcertsasachildandthisinstilledinhimthenotionoftheimportanceandbenefitsoftheartsincreatingapersonalwell-roundedness.JohnplayedbaritonehornfromelementaryschoolthroughcollegeandhisinterestinvisualartbeganinchildhoodasavisitortomuseumsinPhiladelphiaandthesurroundingarea.HissupportofartsorganizationsstartedaftercollegewithsupportoftheSchwenkfelderLibraryandHeritageCenterafacilitydedicatedtopreservingtheheritageoftheSchwenkfeldersandthehistoryofsoutheastPennsylvania.AftermovingtoHuntingtonin1984toworkatHuntingtonAlloysJohnbecameanactiveparticipantandsupporterofartsorganizationsinourareaeventuallyservingontheBoardoftheHuntingtonSymphonyOrchestra.NotingthathelooksformuseumsinwhatevercommunityhemayfindhimselfJohnhasalwaysbeenimpressedbythewidevarietyofexhibitionsofferedatHMAespeciallyinthepermanentinstallations.HefirstbecameaMuseummemberin1985.JohnsvolunteeractivitiesattheMuseumstartedwithhisworkattheHilltopFestivalseveralyearsago.HistenureasamemberoftheBoardofTrusteesbeganin2009andhecurrentlyservesontheODMCcommitteeWelcomeandStuffingsubcommitteestheFinancecommitteeandtheStrategicPlanningcommittee.HehasalsoservedontheFacilitiescommittee.JohnvolunteeredtoassistinHMAofficesabouttwoyearsagoandthatledtowhatisfarandawayhislargestvolunteercontributionJohnscurrentprojectisdevelopingaproceduresmanualwhichaddressesallfunctionsatHMA.HeisnowspendingtwofulldayseachweekattheMuseumworkingonthisveryimportantandexpansiveundertaking.Histimeasamemberandbehind-the-scenesvolunteeratHMAhasledtoanevolutioninJohnsperceptionoftheroleofmuseumsparticularlyastheyrelatetoeducationofthecommunity.HebelievesthatexposingchildrentotheartsfosterstheirappreciationandsenseofwonderandhenotesthatyoulearnalotintheartsthathelpsyouwithothersubjectsandtheearlierthebetterRegardingHMAsroleinthecommunityJohnparticularlycitestheimportanceoftheMuseumseducationaloutreachprogramsnotingthatHMAreachesouttostudentswhoareeconomicallydisadvantagedviaschoolsandsocialserviceagenciestoprovidethemwithopportunitiesforartisticself-expression.HisconnectiontoHMAhasalsoallowedJohnhisownoutletforcreativityviaclassesandworkshopsaswellasachancetogivebacktosociety.LookingaheadJohnrecognizesthechallengeofmaintainingwhattheMuseumcurrentlyoffersandcontinuingtomeetitsmission.HeseesvalueinbuildingonHMAshistoryofeducationalprogrammingandidentifiestheMuseumstaffscommitmenttotheirworkandopennesstoimprovingproceduresasvaluableresources.AndheiswillingtocontinueworkinghardsupportingHMAinitseffortsbecausehehascometoseethattheartsareveryimportantinsupportingbalanceinlifeexperiences.HMABoardMemberandVolunteerJohnWeberposesforaphotointheC.FredEdwardsConservatory.
