7TheArtofTeachingArtMarshallUniversityFacultyArtShowAaronKentBonesNovember232013-February92014SwitzerGalleryThisfalltheHuntingtonMuseumofArtandthevisualartsfacultyfromtheMarshallUniversityCollegeofArtsandMediaformerlycalledtheCollegeofFineArtswilljoinhandstopresentTheArtofTeachingArt.Atthetimeofthiswritingtwenty-oneartistsplantoparticipateintheshowincludingbothfull-timeandadjunctprofessors.Mediarepresentedwillrangefromsculpturedrawingprintspaintingstextilesceramicsjewelrygraphicdesignandvideoanimation.TheCollegeofArtsandMediaisontheeveofanexcitingyearofchanges.ConstructionisunderwayconvertingthebuildingthatonceheldtheformerStoneThomasDepartmentStoreon3rdAvenueacrossfromPullmanSquareintoastate-of-the-artVisualArtsCenter.Whenrenovationsarecompleteslatedforfall2014thecenterwillhousestudioslabsandclassroomsontheupperfloorsandretailandgalleryspaceonthegroundfloor.CometoseethecreativityaliveandwelloncampusincentraldowntownHuntingtonanduponthehill.ThisexhibitisgenerouslysponsoredbytheIsabelleGwynnandRobertDaineExhibitionEndowmentWestVirginiaDivisionofCultureandHistoryandNationalEndowmentfortheArtswithapprovalfromtheWestVirginiaCommissionontheArts.GraphiccourtesyofEdTuckerArchitectsInc.CourtyardSeriesOctober262013-March162014VirginiaCavendishCourtyardThiswillbethesecondsculptureexhibitpartofanongoingseriesintheVirginiaCavendishCourtyardwhichpresentsworkbyemergingartistsfromtheregion.ThisfallaninstallationtitledBonesbyCincinnati-basedartistAaronKentwillbeonview.KentgraduatedwithaBFAinsculpturefromtheArtAcademyofCincinnatiandthenworkedforsevenyearsatCastingArtsandTechnologyinCincinnatigainingpracticalexperienceinmoldmakingbronzecastingandmetalfabrication.Kentworksinothermediaaswellespeciallyprintmakingpaintingandperformanceart.In2011heestablishedDIYPrintingoneofthefewartistrunprintmakingco-opsinCincinnati.HislatestsculptureseriestitledBonesreflectsondeathandthebodysspiritualconnectiontothecircleoflife.InastatementabouttheserieshewroteBonesaresymbolicofdeathandourmortality.Theyarethelastthingsleftofanyhumanoranimal.Inmanysocietiesbonesareconnectedwithreligiousbeliefssecretsocietiesandsometimesevil.Oftenpeoplethinkofthemasgrotesqueandarerepelledbythesightofthemwhetherrealorinart.Infactbonesarethebasisofourbodiesthestructurethatsupportsitandtheybecometheremindersofalifeaftertherestofthebodyhasdecomposed.IncreatingtheBonesseriesofsculpturesIhopetoexpandthesymbolismofbones.Iwanttoconnectthemtolifeandnatureandtodemonstratethegiftgivenbacktonature.Itwasandstillisimportantforpeopletoconnectthecycleoflifewithbonesandtorealizetheirbeautyandgifttotheearth.Inordertocreatethismessageitisimportanttotakethesculpturesoutofthegalleriesandplacetheminsettingswheretheymightnormallybefound.AaronKentThisexhibitisgenerouslysponsoredbytheKatherineHermanPughExhibitionsEndowmentWestVirginiaDivisionofCultureandHistoryandNationalEndowmentfortheArtswithapprovalfromtheWestVirginiaCommissionontheArts.
