3RecentAcquisitionsThisgenrepaintingoneofPerrysbesthasfilledanimpor-tantgapintheMuseums19thcenturyAmericanpaintingcol-lection.ThePotteryArtistpor-traysasimplebrickworkroomwitharoughinteriorandfea-turesrowsandstacksofcrocksandurnsliningonewall.Aslantofsunlightcominginfromtheleftprovidesjustenoughlightforapotteryartistknownasacrockerinthe19thcenturytodecorateanunglazedcrock.Withhisglasseshalfwaydownhisnosesleevesrolledupandalookofconcentrationonhisfacetheartistusesapipe-liketooltotrailasimpleslipdesignonthesideofacrockbalancedonhislap.Thelightalsoillu-minatesjugshangingfromtheceilingandaliddedvesselonthefloorwhichdepictsade-signknownaschickenpeckingcorn.ThismotifaccordingtoHirschlAdlerGalleriesisexclusivelyanAmericande-signusedbyasmallnumberofpottersinNewYorkStateandtoamuchlesserextentinVer-montandPennsylvania.Themotifwasemployedbetweenthe1860sand1880smostpromi-nentlybytwomajorpotteriesinPoughkeepsieandEllenvilleNewYorkitislikelythatoneofthesetwopotterieswastheinspi-rationforThePotteryArtist.EnochWoodPerryAmeri-can1831-1915isbestknownforhisportraitsandpaintingsofevery-dayscenes.LikemanyofhiscontemporarieshetraveledtoEuropeforartisticpursuitsstudyinginDsseldorffortwoyearswithEman-uelLeutzeandtheninPariswithThomasCouture.AfterformalstudyhetraveledtoItalyandservedasU.S.Consulfortwoyearsbeginningin1856.In1858PerryreturnedtotheUnitedStatesandbegantravel-ingaroundthecountryspendingtimeinPennsylvaniaLouisianaHawaiiCaliforniaandUtahactivelypursuingportraitpaintingsineachlocation.HepaintedthelikenessesofnotablemensuchasJeffersonDavisBrighamYoungandUlyssesS.Grant.HealsometandtraveledtoYosemitewithfellowartistAlbertBierstadtultimatelyrentingBierstadtsvacatedTenthStreetStudioaftermovingtoNewYorkCityin1866.HesoonbecameassociatedwiththeNationalAcademyofDesigntheBrooklynArtAssociationandtheCenturyAssociation.HeleftNewYorkCityforSanFranciscofrom1877-1881cultivatingmanywesterncollectorssuchasGeorgeHearstLelandStanfordandCollisP.HuntingtonthefounderofHuntingtonWestVirginia.ThePotteryArtistpaintedwhenPerrywas57showsachangeinstylefrommuchofhisearlierwork.ExhibitedattheNationalAcademysannualexhibitionof1889theworkwashighlylaudedintheNewYorkpapersatthetimeItisthebestpicturethisacademicianhasevershownSpringattheAcademyNewYorkTimesMarch301889p.4.ThePotteryArtisttingedwithnostalgiaforapre-industrialpastisaninterestingamalgambetweena19thcenturyoccupationaldaguerreotypeandarichdetailedinteriorsuchasthosefoundinDutcholdmasterpaintings.EnochWoodPerryAmerican1831-1915ThePotteryArtist1888Oiloncanvas2412x20SigneddatedandinscribedatlowerleftE.WoodPerry88NAImagecourtesyofHirschlAdlerGalleriesInc.NewYorkN.Y.
