14AbouttheArtistHungLiuwasborninChangchunChinain1948ayearbe-forethecreationofthePeoplesRepublicofChina.In1966asshepreparedtograduatefromhighschoolandattendartschoolinBeijingMaoZedongsCulturalRevolutionturnedChinain-sideout.AttemptingtopurgethecountryofWesterninfluencesChairmanMaoorderedartistsandintellectualstobereeducatedamongstthepeasantsandfarmersinremoteruralvillages.ForthenextfouryearsLiulaboredinthericewheatandcornfieldssevendaysaweek.In1972sheenteredtheRevolutionaryEntertainmentDepartmentofBeijingsTeachersCollegetostudyartandeduca-tionbutindividualexpressionwasnotpartofhertrainingthererathershesaysshewastaughttouseChineseartistictraditionstodirectpropagandatothemasses.Aftergraduatingin1975LiubeganteachingartatJingShananeliteBeijingschool.ShealsotaughtonarenownedChinesetelevisionprogramforchildrenHowtoDrawandPaintwhichlastedseveralyears.In1979sheattendedtheCentralAcademyofFineArtsoneofChinasleadingartschoolswhereshemajoredinmuralpainting.StillresistanttoofficialattitudesaboutartshebeganthelongprocessthatbroughthertoCalifornia.AfterbeingacceptedtothevisualartsgraduateprogramattheUniversityofCaliforniaSanDiegofromwhereshewouldreceiveherMFALiusaysittookfouryearstoobtainapassportfromtheChinesegovernment.HungLiucurrentlylivesinOaklandCaliforniaandisatenuredprofessorofpaintingatMillsCollege.ShehasreceivednumerousawardsgrantsandrecognitionsthroughouthercareerincludingtwoPaintingFellowshipsfromtheNationalEndowmentfortheArts.Herworkhasbeenexhibitedaroundtheworldandresidesinthepermanentcollectionsofmanyprestigiousinstitutionsinclud-ingKemperMuseumofContemporaryArtandDesignKansasCityMissouriLosAngelesCountyMuseumofArtCaliforniaNationalMuseumofAmericanArtWashingtonD.C.OaklandMuseumofCaliforniaSanFranciscoMuseumofModernArtCaliforniaSanJoseMuseumofArtCaliforniaWalkerArtCen-terMinneapolisMinnesotaTheWhitneyMuseumofAmericanArtNewYorkamongmanyothers.SheisrepresentedbymultipleprominentgalleriesincludingtheNancyHoffmanGalleryNewYorkNY.AbouttheArtistsWorkHistoryisnotastaticimageorafrozenstory.Itisnotanoun.Evenifitsimagesandstoriesareveryolditisalwaysflowingforward.Historyisaverb.HungLiuOneofthefirstChineseartiststostudyintheUnitedStatesHungLiuiswidelyregardedforavastandinnovativebodyofhighlyevocativepaintingsmuralsdrawingsprintmakingandinstallation.CharacterizedbytheexpressivepainterlyeffectsofWesternModernismandChinesedecorativemotifsherworkisrichlylayered.ShefrequentlyreferencesanonymoushistoricalphotographsofChinaandwithdefttechniquebreathesnewlifeintoindividualslostinthesweepofhistoryparticularlyChinesewomenchildrenrefugeespeasantsprostitutesandsoldiers.InessenceLiuturnsoldphotographsintonewpaintingsliberatedfromtherigidmethodologyofsocialistrealismthestyleinwhichshewastrainedbymergingbothEasternandWesterntraditions.OvertheyearsLiuhasincorporatedmoreandmorepaintdripsintoherworkachievedbythinningthepigmentswithlinseedoil.Gravityhersacredcollaboratorpullsthepaintdownwardanddividesthecompositionininterestingunpredictableways.Thisef-fectsimultaneouslyunifiesanddissolvesthephoto-basedimagerysuggestingthepassageofmemoryintohistory.HungLiuWalterGropiusMasterArtistSeriesPresentsHungLiuRatYear19842008.Oilonlinenandmixedmediaonwoodpanel64x100.Imagecourtesyoftheartist.ExhibitionMarch1-April272014PublicPresentation7p.m.March272014WorkshopSel-PortraitsandSelfestakesplace9a.m.to4p.m.March28-302014
