“Vestige of a Tree” exhibit to open at HMA

Contact: John Gillispie, (304) 529-2701, Ext. 307

The exhibit Vestige of a Tree opens May 11 and runs through Sept. 1, 2013, at the Huntington Museum of Art.

A guided tour of the exhibit and a nature trail walk will take place at 7 p.m. May 28, 2013, during the Fourth Tuesday Tour at HMA. Refreshments will be served.

Objects featured in Vestige of a Tree include tools, boxes, items of personal adornment, walking sticks/canes, dolls, furniture, ritual masks, musical instruments, and sculpture. All of the exhibit items began life as a tree, then a piece of wood, then an object, and now a work on exhibit in a museum! All employ wood as the main material, and all have been manipulated by artists and craftsmen for their own use – aesthetic or otherwise.

This exhibit is sponsored by The Katherine & Herman Pugh Exhibitions Endowment; the West Virginia Division of Culture and History; and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
