VOLUNTEERS

The Huntington Museum of Art, one of the treasures of the Tri-State region, could not achieve its stated mission--"to serve as a regional museum and culture center; to acquire, conserve, preserve, display and elucidate objects of art; to provide and promote excellence in education, services and experiences with emphasis of the visual arts; to operate a plant conservatory and attendant nature programming; to nurture creativity; to foster regional pride; and, to enhance the quality of life for all citizens in our region."--without the participation of a dedicated group of volunteers. Volunteers augment the paid professional staff in the areas of the Museum listed below, along with some typical assignments which they might carry out.


Administrative
Assisting in the offices of the Director, Secretary, Comptroller, and at the Reception Desk. Typical assignments:

  • Assembling materials and stuffing envelopes for mailings.
  • Acting as substitute during absence of Receptionist.
  • Performing financial record keeping duties.
  • Providing clerical assistance to Director's Secretary.

Development
Assisting with membership drives, public relations, and fund raising events such as the Open Door Campaign, Hilltop Festival, Museum Ball, WV Wine Classic. Typical assignments:

  • Serving as Chairman or member of a committee for the annual Museum Ball.
  • Sorting, pricing and selling books during the annual Hilltop Festival.
  • Making follow-up telephone calls to potential donors to the annual Open Door Campaign.

Curatorial
Assisting the departments curators and registrars. Typical assignments:

  • Assisting with project research.
  • Helping with inventory.
  • Packing and unpacking exhibition objects.
  • Vault maintenance.

Education
Working with children, adults and special interest groups to interpret the Museum's collections and traveling exhibitions. Typical assignments:

  • Serving as docent for weekday tours of school and community groups.
  • Serving as docent for weekend tours for Museum visitors.
  • Serving as a conditional tour guide for specialty tours.

Library
Assisting the Librarian in the Art Reference Library. Typical assignments:

  • Processing library materials.
  • Cataloguing.
  • Entering computer data.
  • Performing research on permanent collections.

Conservatory
Assisting the Horticulturist in the Conservatory and/or Museum grounds. Typical assignments:

  • Conducting tours of the Conservatory and Nature Trail.
  • Maintaining the Herb Garden.
  • Performing gardening tasks (potting, weeding, etc.).

Museum Store
Assisting in the operation of the Museum Store. Typical assignments:

  • Performing as sales clerk.
  • Checking-in and pricing of merchandise.

Hospitality Committee
Assisting with Museum hospitality needs. Typical assignments:

  • Providing and/or soliciting food.
  • Arranging tables.
  • Providing and/or arranging floral decorations.
  • Providing beverage service.
