FIRST HUNTINGTON MUSEUM OF ART
COMPOSERS' FESTIVAL

October 11-12, 2003

The first Huntington Museum of Art Composers' Festival was held on October 11-12. Organized by HMA's Music Artist-in-Residence, Victoria Bragin, the festival was held in conjunction with Exhibition 280/Parameters, a juried art show featuring the works of visual artists from West Virginia and the contiguous states.

The festival was highlighted by a concert in which composers currently resident in the state were iinvited to showcase a composition of their choosing.

The previous day, Bang on a Can, a composition workshop open to the public, but focusing on middle school and high school students, was given at the Museum by Dr. Mark Zanter, assistant professor of composition at Marshall University. Immediately following the composers' concert, the composers, performers, workshop attendees, and interested members of the audience participated in a panel discussion.

Bragin says, "West Virginia has a rich tradition in the arts and with Margaret Mary Layne's strong desire to integrate all the fine arts into the Museum activities, this is an opportune time to showcase the State's creative contemporary composers. To our knowledge, this is the first time that composers from the state will gather for such an event and we hope interest will be sufficiently high to make this a recurring event."
